Tom Mansfield
Eco - Linguistics | Permaculture | NLP
Tom Mansfield has a creative practice in performance poetry and pursues broad academic interests as an autodidact. He is professionally working as a sustainability consultant across multiple sectors from technology to the arts ranging from sustainable construction to eco-linguistics.
His current focus is on ecological thinking as it relates to design and language. Motivated by the question ‘How can we create life through our daily actions?’.
His generalist experience and multi-skilled approach offers a unique perspective on our contemporary culture and it’s built environment. By working with both the social and the practical he is able to synthesise material solutions and plot developmental pathways to help navigate the accelerating challenges of the 21st century. This distinctive vantage point uncovers many unique opportunities bridging industry, academia, management and the arts to effect collective behavioural change. Powered by an extensive and uniquely varied social network, cultivated through years of producing public speaker forums he is able to connect specialists and skills to where they are needed.
Personal development: Language
Focusing on behavioural change through language and becoming mindful of the concepts we use can radically alter the opportunities we notice and the expectations we have. Industrial and materialistic concepts are no longer fit for purpose in a world defined by global ecological issues and systems. There is now a need to develop connective, process oriented language that enables us to rethink our systems by seeing the world more as it is: moving, dynamic.
Do we Build or Grow community…? Studying NLP, Ecolinguistics and non-competitive dynamics have formed the theory and tools for seeding these better performing concepts in many forms of communication, internal and external messaging, marketing and education. By identifying language which is misaligned with the purpose and direction of individuals and organisations it is possible to transform concepts and affect rapid purposeful change.
Collective development: Infrastructure
To live in a way that is conducive to life, we are now forced to entirely re-imagine the layers of our civilisation. This means a radical shift from the extractive to the generative whether in energy or construction.
Drawing on 15 years of direct experience in the built environment from fabrication to design I work with partners to find low-carbon and low embodied energy solutions. I’m currently working with co-design to involve communities in projects local to them. I advocate for circular economy processes and sustainable materials at every opportunity.
